Widows Day: Ekwunife Felicitates Anambra Widows, Promises More Support
Sen. Uche Ekwunife, the Deputy Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Nov..8 election in Anambra has felicitated widows across the state on the occasion of the 2025 International Widows Day.
Ekwunife, known for her commitment to the welfare of women, the vulnerable, especially widows said she remained unwavering in her support for them through visible, life-changing interventions.
The theme of this year’s celebration of Widow’s Day was “Empower Her: From Loss to Leadership”.
She recalled that her desire to uplift for empowerment of widows inspired her to construct 37 fully furnished bungalows across Anambra communities for widows and underprivileged women.
Ekwunife said widows had been a major focus of her social intervention programmes since she began her career in public office adding that numerous skill acquisition programmes had been organised for them over the years,
“We have also provided them with start-up kits to promote financial independence.
“Widows also regularly benefit from the distribution of food items and domestic appliances like gas cylinders and cookers, which are intended to ease their burden and reduce dependence on firewood.
“The theme of this year’s celebration aligns with my long-held belief that widows should be supported not just to survive their loss, but to take on active roles in their communities and in leadership,” she said.
Ekwunife said elected Deputy Governor, she would institutionalise support programs for widows in Anambra while describing Dr Nicholas Ukachukwu, governorship candidate of APC as a God-fearing and empathetic leader.
She said she was confident that his administration would prioritise the welfare of vulnerable groups, including widows, and create policies that reflect genuine care for the people.
“With Ukachukwu’s leadership and her my experience in grassroots empowerment, we would be able to deliver unprecedented support to those in need and bring lasting change to the lives of Anambra’s most vulnerable,” she said.
