IWD: LAJA Calls For Enhanced Operational Environment For Female Journalists
League of Anambra Journalists in Abuja (LAJA) has called for stronger support systems and opportunities that will improve the welfare, safety and professional growth of female journalists.
LAJA which made the call on the occasion of 2026 International Women’s Day said female journalists should be encouraged to continue to play their role in shaping public discourse inspire the unique professional and social challenges they faced.
The Statement which was signed by Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo and Princess-Ekwi Ajide, President and Secretary respectively of the body said women in the media remained powerful voices for accountability, social justice and community development.
Ut condemned what it considered workplace discrimination, limited leadership opportunities and safety concerns in the course of duty against women in the profession.
LAJA said empowering female journalists was not only about fairness but also about strengthening journalism itself adding that women brought critical perspectives and human-centred storytelling which enriched public understanding of societal issues.
“We call on media organisations, professional bodies and policymakers to prioritise policies that promote equal opportunities, mentorship, fair representation in newsroom leadership and safer working environments for women.
“Deliberate investment in the capacity and wellbeing of female journalists will enhance their ability to report effectively, tell impactful stories and contribute meaningfully to national development.
“We encourage. young women aspiring to join the journalism profession to remain resilient and committed because their voices are essential in shaping a more informed and inclusive society,” it said.
LAJA said this years IWD was another opportunity reaffirm its commitment to promoting unity, professional excellence and initiatives that would uplift and empower female journalists within its fold.
