History: Marvin Gaye Shot Dead By Father
On April 1, 1984, exactly 42 years ago, Marvin Gaye, an American soul singer, songwriter and musician soul singer was fatally shot by his own father
He was born Marvin Pentz Gay Jnr on April 2, 1939.
Gaye helped to shape the sound of Motown Records, first as an in house session player in the 1960s and later as a solo artist.
He had a string of hits, such as How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) and I Heard It Through the Grapevine
He also did duet recordings with Mary Wells, Kim Weston and Tammi Terrell and later earned the titles Prince of Motown and Prince of Soul.
During the 1970s, Gaye recorded the albums What’s Going On (1971) and Let’s Get It On (1973). “Sexual Healing”, released in 1982 on the album Midnight Love, won him his first two Grammy Awards.
He was fatally shot by his father, Marvin Gay, Snr. on April 1, 1984 on the day before his 45th birthday.
Gaye was said to have intervened in an argument between his parents, leading his father to shoot him twice in the chest with a gun Gaye had gifted him.
