Two women die, four injured in Anambra truck crash
Two women lost their lives in Awka, Anambra capital town on Friday when a heavy duty truck crashed into a stationary shuttle bus leaving no fewer than four persons seriously injured.
The truck with plate number XQ 679 EPE allegedly failed break, lost control and crushed the mini bus at kwata junction on the Enugu-Onitsha express way.
An eye withness who identified himself as Mr Joseph Okafor who was washing his car at a nearby crash wash when the he accident occurred.
According to Okafor, we were here washing our cars when the truck was running at a high speed and the conductor was shouting the break has failed and the shuttle was discharging passengers near the traffic light.
“A police man was trying to stop the truck from beating the traffic light but the truck could not stop and all that we saw was the truck climbing on top of the shuttle and damaging it,” he said.
The witness said the driver of the shuttle escaped death alongside a woman carrying her baby and three others.
But one woman who was trapped in between the truck and the shuttle was rescued by personnel of the Police and Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).
Mr Andrew Kumapayi, Sector Commander of the FRSC who confirmed the crash at the scene said that the those who sustained injuries had been rushed to hospital where they were responding to treatment.
Kumapayi blamed the crash on speeding by the truck driver who wanted to beat the traffic light and rammed into the shuttle bus in the process.
