NEWMAP distributes seedlings, energy bulbs to 34Anambra communities
)The Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) Anambra office on Tuesday commenced distribution of agro seedlings and energy saving bulbs to some communities in the state.
The distribution which was supervised by Mr Mike Ivenso , the Project Coordinator of NEWMAP in Anambra said not less than 27,000 units of energy-saving bulbs had been procured by the project for distribution across erosion ravaged communities in the State.
Ivenso who was represented by Mr Emeka Achebe, the Communication Officer of NEWMAP in Anambra while making presentation in Abagana community in Njikokka Council Area during the presentation said the distribution of energy bulbs was to conscientise the people on the reality of climate change.
According to Ivenso, “the energy-saving bulbs uses significantly less power to produce the same luminous capacity compared to traditional bulbs thereby reducing greenhouse emissions which is a crucial element in the fight against global warming and climate change impact.
He said about 34 communities in the state would benefit from the donation and that this was in line with Governor Obiano’s vison for creating a climate resilient State, one community at a time.
On the farm seedling, Mr. Emenike Ajulufo, the Natural Resources Specialist, explained that they included some socio-economic trees of local species which were carefully chosen to help regenerate forest.
Ajufulu said the seedlings would help ensure green environment around erosion-prone communities in the State.
He explained that the Farm seedlings will provide livelihood restoration for vulnerable population in the effort the create food security.
“Deep roots of these trees hold the soil to make them erosion-resistant, their branches provide cover and carbon sink for humans and the environment,” he said.
The specialist said that when combined, the 2-pronged approach of economic tree planting and farm seedling will prevent formation of gullies and improve livelihood support for the people of Anambra.
The NEWMAP team were welcomed by His Royal Highness Igwe Mbamali Okeke , the traditional ruler of Abagana who also received the items on behalf of the community,
Igwe Mbamalu commended the State Government for the kind gesture noting that NEWMAP has really been rolling out different innovative measures in erosion control.
Chief Godfrey Nzeakor, the Community Association Chairman, expressed the community’s gratitude to NEWMAP pointing out that the seedlings will go along way in stabilising their erosion prone community while assuring of an equitable distribution of the items.
The distribution of the seedlings and energy-saving bulbs was held simultaneously by the NEWMAP officials across various communities of the state.
