Police Probe Extra Judicial Killing Of Youth In Anambra
The Police Command in Anambra has commenced investigation into the death of one Ugochukwu Onwuzuluike who was allegedly shot by a yet to be identified person in an escort convoy on Tuesday.
Onwuzuluike was shot at Awkuzu Junction on the Enugu-Onitsha expressway while riding his motorcycle but was confirmed dead in a hospital as a result of injuries from a bullet.
Residents said the victim died from gunshot of police personnel who mounted a barricade on the expressway for daring cross the road against their order.
Mr Monday Kuryas, Commissioner of Police in Anambra gave the order for full scale investigation into the unfortunate incident after receiving complaints from members of the deceased family in his office on Wednesday.
DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command who disclosed this in a statement, said the CP had assured that no stone would be left unturned in the bid to unmask the culprit.
He however appealed to the bereaved and members of the public to remain calm and refrain from taking laws into own hands.
“The CP today received family members of a resident later identified as Ugochukwu Onwuzuluike who died at Awkuzu on April 20 in his office at the State Headquarters in Awka and has ordered the immediate launch of a full-scale investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death.
“Meanwhile, information available to the command, reveals that the deceased was shot by an unknown person suspected to be in an escort convoy, while he was riding a motorcycle,
“The unconscious body of victim was taken to a nearby hospital by police operatives attached to Oyi police Division of the command, who swiftly responded to a distress call on the incident and was later confirmed dead by the medical doctor on duty.
“The CP commiserates with the family, colleagues and friends of the deceased, he is saddened by the incident and appeals to all concerned to maintain calm.
“He says the command is committed to thoroughly investigating and bringing the perpetrators to book,” he stated.
Ikenga enjoined members of the public to assist the police with useful information that would aid the success of the investigation.
