Lawmaker Fetes Victorious Gov’s Cup Team In Anambra
Players and management of Amawbia Town Football team have been commended for emerging the third best team in the 2020 edition of the Anambra Governors Cup.
The team came behind Neni and Aguleri teams which emerged winners and runners up in the competition which featured the 177 communities in Anambra last December.
Mr Pius Okoye, member representing Awka South 11 State Constituency in the Anambra House of Assembly who hosted the team applauded them for doing the community proud and making it a force to reckon with in football.
Okoye who has sponsored Obizi Cup, a grassroots football tournament for many years now said their exploit was a testimony that his support for the game was yielding dividends.
He also commended Gov. Willie Obiano for sponsoring the Gov’s Cup while the team supported the governor and his party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
He also urged members of the team to ensure they exercise their civic right and cast their votes for Prof Chukwuma Soludo of APGA on Nov. 6.
Okoye donated a good sum of money to serve as a morale booster.
Speaking on behalf of the team, Dr Chris Abakare, a lecturer at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka Awka said they were glad that the lawmaker received them in recognition of their efforts.
Abakare who is the Team Manager said the club had no fewer than 56 players between the ages of 13 years and 28 years on its list.
“We fought gallantly and emerged third place in spite of numerous challenges.
“We are happy for the support we have received from you and we are determined to continue to bring glory to Amawbia and the entire Awka South Local Government Area,” he said.
