Drivers Protest Touting As Scores Escape Death In Anambra
No fewer than 20 persons on Tuesday narrowly escaped death when a truck fell over and landed on people standing by at Upper Iweka area in the Anambra commercial town of Onitsha.
The accident was caused by some touts who were collecting illegal toll contrary to the ban on touting and illegal tolling by the Chukwuma Soludo government.
The driver who refused to part with money and ran into a ditch in the process thereby resulting to the fall of the truck.
This led to spontaneous protests by the angry people which caused gridlock on roads around the city.
According to an eye witness, one person was trapped and a crane was needed to rescue him.
“Roads linking the Upper Iweka roundabout blocked from all fronts due to the accident.
Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corps have moved in to rescue the victims and clear the road.
Corps Commander Irelewuyi Adeoye, Sector Commander of FRSC in Anambra said the trapped victim had been rescued and taken to hospital.
He said “the trapped victim has been successfully evacuated alive and taken to Borromeo hospital for proper medical attention.
“However the truck drivers are presently protesting against the activities of touts (agberos) which led to the crash.
“FRSC personnel and other agencies are trying to appeal to the protesting truck drivers who blocked the expressway to allow reason prevail.
