Washington, Metropolitan Emerge Onitsha South Volleyball Finalists At Anambra School Sports Festival
Washington Memorial Grammar School boys’ volleyball team has progressed to the second stage of the Anambra school sports festival after emerging winners of the Onitsha North Local Government Area intercommunity contest.
Washington defeated their sole rivals Metropolitan boys which also moved to the next stage 2-0 in two sets 25- 4 points and 25 – 2 points respectively in the games decided at the Chubs Ikpeazu Mini Stadium, Onitsha on Thursday.
In the girls’ category, Washington advanced to the LGA stage alongside Ado Girls Grammar School which emerged second.
Washington girls team defeated their Inland Girls counterparts 2-0 by 25-10 and 25-3 and walloped Ado Girls 2-0 with 25-6 and 25-13 to emerge winners of the round robbing series.
Ado girls joined Washington to represent Onitsha North LGA after beating their rivals Inland Girls 2-0 with 25-7 points and 25-9 points in a third match decider.
The Anambra school sports festival tagged “First Solution School Sports Festival” for primary and secondary in Anambra kicked off on May 17 across the 21 Local Government Areas of the State.
Patrick-Estate Onyedum, Onyedum Chairman of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission expressed satisfaction with the turnout of schools at the venue he visited and charged the students to compete fairly according to the rules of the games
Onyedum said the festival was in the spirit of reinventing Anambra sports wise and a starting point for raising a new generation of sporting champion from the State.
A total of 10 sports would be featured including Athletics, Basketball, Chess, Football, Scrabble, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Taekwondo and Volleyball while Cricket will be a demonstration sport.
