Journalists Threaten Boycott Of Soludo’s Government Activities
Members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council have threatened to boycott coverage and reportage of the activities of Gov. Chukwuma Soludo.
This was contained in a Statement signed by Chief Chuks Ilozue and Mrs Tochukwu Ifejika, Chairman and Secretary respectively of the Chapel after its congress in Awka on Tuesday.
Correspondents’ Chapel is the umbrella body of journalists whose publishing houses or headquarters are domiciled outside Anambra
The Journalists said they had reviewed their relationship with Soludo and of his media team including the Commissioner for Information, Sir Paul Nwosu and the Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Christian Aburime for or over two years
They said Soludo administration had reduced them to bystanders and consumers of information instead of working with them as partners and active participants.
According to them, there is a serious lacuna in the relationship between the chapel and government occasioned by the nonchalant attitude of the governor, his government and his media team towards Correspondents’ Chapel.
“It baffles us that our governor can stay for two years without meeting members of the Correspondents Chapel to intimate Anambra people about his programmes and activities.
“Chapel members are bewildered that we are not being carried along in the coverage of government activities, rather we are fed with press releases and statements,” they said
The body of journalists warned that if the current relationship persisted they would deem it that Soludo and his media team did not need their relationship.
“We therefore demand a review of this relationship, to enable us to hold the government accountable as required by extant laws.
“Therefore we shall be left with no other option than to act accordingly,” it said.
