FRSC Commences 2024 Ember Safety Awareness Campaign In Anambra
The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) says it is ready to ensure safe and free traffic during the Christmas and New Year season.
C.C. Joyce Alexander, the Sector Commander of FRSC, Anambra Command said this at the commencement of 2024 of 2024 Ember Month Patrol in Awka on Tuesday.
The theme of the campaign “Speak up against dangerous driving: Crashes kill more passengers than Drivers”
She said the command would deploy all personnel and equipment across the seven units within the sector for 24hrs operations to provide quick response to situations when they arose.
She said serious attention would be given to the Nigeria Bridge to avoid gridlock as a result of the expected surge in traffic adding that her command was collaborating with the Delta State command to ensure the Asaba end was also free.
Alexander said the sector would set up Mobile Court at selected strategic traffic locations to try traffic rule violators while calling on motorists to drive cautiously and avoid being caught up with the law.
She said the Mobile Court was mainly to keep motorists on their toes and not for punishing them or generation of revenue.
According to her, the Mobile Court is not for persecution of road users or generating revenue but a precautionary measure to guard against reckless drivers.
Alexander said the usual ember month sensitisation in motor parks would now be done as town hall engagements with relevant stakeholders because drivers who were the target audience were not available most times.
She said the target had shifted to passengers because they constituted a larger population of victims than drivers in the case of a crash.
“Passengers must avoid distractions and contribute to safe road use, this is because most of the time, passengers are the most affected in the event of traffic crashes, hence the need for them to start speaking up,” she said..
She called on passengers to avoid putting pressure on drivers to speed and ensured they gave the necessary information including blood groups in the passengers’ manifest.
Alexander said the nationwide road shows and town hall engagements as directed by the Corps Marshall between Nov. 6 to Nov. 7 would be carried out diligently across the Anambra Sector Command.
