Anambra East Council Boss Not Involved In Umueri Demolition
Mr Ifeanyi Chinweze, chairman of Anambra East Local Government Council has dismissed reports linking him with demolition exercise in Umueri Community as sheer blackmail.
Chinweze was reacting to a viral post which claimed he collaborated with the traditional ruler of the town to pull down fences of property belonging to members of a political party at Otuocha Udabor Umueri.
He told journalists in Awka on Thursday that the demolition was internal affairs of the community and had nothing to do with local government administration.
He said groups under the eagis of “Elders in Council of Umueri Community” and “Umueri General Assembly” led by Chief Sam Emeka and Amb John Metchie had on Nov. 28 2024 and Aug. 22, 2025 wrote separate letters complaining of construction of illegal structures in the community.
He said the group had called for immediate intervention of the office of the Chairman of Anambra East Local Government Council to clear illegal buildings in most areas in Udabor Otuocha Umueri.
He said the elders and U.G.A mentioned some individuals who were responsible for the illegal activities while urging the Council authority to intervene as a matter of urgency.
“In response a team from the Works and environmental department of Anambra East Local Government Area visited the location to ascertain the genuineness of claims from the elders and U.G.A.
“Prior to the inspection date somebody had approached the Councilor representing Otuocha Ward 2 in order to bribe him to help him shift the attention of the team coming for inspection,” he said.
Chinweze said he had called for dialogue after reports from the inspection came to his table and pleaded with the elders and in council and U.G.A to allow the matter be resolved peacefully.
He expressed surprise at the reports that both groups moved into the site with caterpillar and removed the fence.
He said when when he was alerted he drafted men of Udogachi in the council to restore peace at the location.
“It is important for the public note that the office of the chairman of Anambra East Local Government Council did not at any point get involved or attack or molest anybody,
“We therefore urge the public to disregard any misleading information against the Chairman of Anambra East Local Government Area,” he said.
