Anambra Guber: LP Faction Elects Umejiego, As Nwosu Vows To Challenge Illegality
A faction of the Labour Party, LP loyal to Sen. Nenadi Usman led National Caretaker Committee on Thursday elected Chief Jude Umejiego as its governorship candidate for the Nov. 8 governorship election in Anambra.
Umejiego polled 180 votes to defeat Paul Nwosu who garnered Nwosu 69 votes
Recall that a faction of the party loyal to the Supreme Court ousted Mr Julius Abure had on April 5 produced George Moghalu as its candidate.
Nwosu had pulled out of the previous congress citing the incompetence of the Julius Abureled leadership to hold the election as well as irregularities as reasons.
Sunday Okereke, the Acting chairman of the electoral committee who declared the results said said the Congress was in line with electoral act 2022, and the guidelines of LP.
“I hereby declare and return Hon Jude Umejiego as the duly elected candidate of Labour Party for the Nov. 8, 2025.”
Umejiego, in his acceptance speech pledged to work hard for the victory of the party.
He said LP will use Anambra as a model to showcase the party’s plan to turn Nigeria around from a consumption to a production nation
In a reaction, Nwosu, a top aspirant for the ticket rejected the exercise saying he would contest it in court as he was the only eligible candidate for the congress.
He said he did not participate in the April 5 congress because it was against the Supreme Court Judgment with attendant irregularities and illegalities in the process leading to it with a commitment to participating in in future process that are credible and transparent.
He welcomed the decisions of the meetings of the National Caretaker Committee on April 9 and I recognise that the Supreme Court Judgment of the of April 4 which voided the April 5 Labour Party Primary Election.
“I am of the view that I am the only Aspirant of the Labour Party, who have met all the guidelines and timelines stipulated by Labour Party and INEC pertinent to the Labour Party Primary Election, 2025.
“Consequent to the outcome of the Primaries, which produced a placeholder, I hereby reserve my option to appeal the outcome and pursue to the full extent of the law measures that will protect due process and my rights in this regard,” he said..
