Anambra NMA Donates Palliatives To Sickle Cell Orphanage
The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) on Thursday paid a visit to the Sickle Cell Orphanage and Underprivileged Home, in Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area and donated some relief materials.
The visit was part the the association’s corporate social responsibility and the activities in the ongoing 2025 Anambra Physicians’ Week
Items donated included bags of rice, cartons of noodles, tubers of yam toilet tissues and scholarship opportunities for patients.
Dr Princeton Okam, Chairman of the NMA in Anambra who led members on the visit said sickle cell disease was a preventable health condition which was ravaging the society.
Okam said the condition arises when individuals with sickle cell genes in their genotype procreate, warning that such a union would produce children with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) which was incurable.
The NMA chairman raised alarm over sickle cell scourge and condition of patients and called for more government attention and funding.
“It comes with
with perpetual health challenges and burden both to the individual, parents and society at large,” he said.
Okam called for more public awareness, mandatory premarital screening and full implementation of Anambra Sickle Cell Disease Control and Eradication Law, 2019
“The patients should have access to free healthcare, free education and rehabilitation centres for those patients who are addicted to opioids.
“We want to commend this orphanage for taking good care of the 28 children with SCD here and we promise more support and collaboration going forward,” he said .
