Anambra Police Command To Investigate Cause Of Youth’s Death In Custody
The Police Command in Anambra has said it will investigate the cause of death of a young man identified as Uchenna who died while in custody at the Cid Annex Awkuzu.
DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) said this in a Statement on Monday.
Uchenna was said to have veen involved in a fight when he was arrested and detained by the Police.
A twitter user who made the case public alleged that the Investigative Police Officer who waa handling the matter had refused to release Uchenna because of the inability of the deceased family to pay the sum of N150, 000 for his bail.
But Ikenga said the Uchenna was arrested for armed robbery and not a case of two fighting as alleged.
He said the suspects all confessed to the crime in their statement before they were detained in the cell.
On the possible cause of the death, the PPRO said other suspects in custody revealed that as they were sleeping late Uchenna started acting abnormally.
“He screamed and hit his head on the wall before he slumped.
“The victim was taken to the hospital and he was confirmed dead by the doctor.
‘No money was demanded or collected by the IPO or any Policeman as attested by the deceased father.
“We shall do an autopsy to find out the cause of his death,” he stated.
Ikenga said Twitter user account was incite the public against the police,
He said command was inviting the Twitter user to come up with credible proof of his claims which would assist investigation.
*Meanwhile, the case is still under investigation and more findings shall be made public soon,” he stated.
