Anambra South: Egwuonwu Promises To Champion Legislation On Environmental Protection
Chief Akai Egwuonwu has said he would support laws that would address the environmental challenges facing the people of Anambra South Senatorial District if elected a senator in the coming bye election.
Egwuonwu who is contesting for the ticket of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) said in Friday said on Thursday that he would deploy his wealth of experience to make the ecological challenges of the area a matter of national emergency.
He said the erosion menace in Oko, Nanka, Nnewi, Ekwulummili, Amichi, Ihiala, Ozubulu and the environ had become an existential threat to the livelihood, infrastructure, and cultural heritage of these communities.
“With Anambra is the erosion capital of the world” with over 1,000 active erosion sites, it is clear that the time for decisive action is now and I am committed to this.
“I recognise the devastating impact of soil erosion, particularly in Anambra South, where it is causing the loss of farmland, homes, and critical infrastructure. in these communities which are prone to frequent landslides and flooding, their landscape is rapidly deteriorating.
“If elected to the Senate, I will advocate for Federal and State collaboration on erosion management, securing funding for erosion control projects and promote sustainable erosion control techniques,” he said.
He said he would champion community-led solutions and awareness, advocate for land use planning and regulation, restore the ecological balance through reforestation and and addressing climate change and flooding
