Anambra Windstorm: Fr Joseph Old Boys Laud Obiano’s Intervention
Fr Joseph Memorial High School (FJMHS) Aguleri, Old Boys Association has commended Gov. Willie Obiano for personally visiting the school to assess the extent of damage from the April 10 windstorm and ordered remedial works.
Dr Emman Udeh-Akpeh, National President of the Association made the commendation in a statement on Sunday.
A heavy windstorm has hit Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area and destroyed about 14 buildings and 15 electric poles in 61 years old FJMHS alone among other property in the town.
FJMHS, owned by the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha is also a major holding centre for displaced persons in the State, particularly, during flood disasters, some of the buildings which serve as the holding centres were also destroyed.
Dr Emman Udeh-Akpeh, described the governors directive that remedial works be commenced in parts of the schools as a soothing relief to the traumatised school community.
“For Governor Obiano to visit the school last Tuesday in company of his Commissioners was not only prompt but also highly commendable.
“It is the hallmark of a great leader to not only listen but also to act promptly, he visited to personally see firsthand the damage from the rain storms, and to give remedial orders immediately on the spot, we doff our hats for His Excellency.
“We are not surprised, the governor always been a man of action, always listening, and taking actions to address the yearnings of the people of Anambra.
“We are sure that like he promised, he will wipe away our tears before long, he gave instructions there and then that remedial works should begin immediately.
“On behalf of the entire Old Boys Association, the PTA, and the School authorities, we thank him immensely and pray that the Almighty God will continue to empower him to continue the great works he has been doing for in Anambra,” he stated.
The Association also called on the National Emergency Management Agency and State Emergency Management Agency which had both visited the school to expedite action on measures to rebuild the school.
“We are looking forward to excellent cooperation from both bodies with the Anambra State Government in bringing normalcy to the lives of the over 2,000 students of the great school,” he added.
Meanwhile, Mr Hippo Onwuekpuke, the President General of Aguleri town said Aguleri was in dire need of urgent intervention to repair the ruins of the disaster.
