ARTMA Warns Private Motorists Against Obstructing ‘Service Lane’ In Onitsha
The Anambra Road Traffic Management Agency (ATMA) has warned private motorists to steer clear of the outer layer of the expressway popularly known as service lane in the commercial city of Onitsha.
Engr. Emeka Okonkwo, Managing Director of ARTMA said this when he met with commercial vehicle operators last week.
Okonkwo insisted all commercial vehicle operators must move to the Service lane whenever they wanted to pick or drop passengers.
He said they had received several complaints that part of the challenges commercial bus operators encountered was obstruction arising from parking of vehicles on both sides of the road.
The ARTMA MD said the directive was in line with Gov. Chukwuma Soludo’s ideology of regenerating Onitsha and other major cities of the state.
He said ARTMA had been in the vanguard of ensuring that
sanity and orderliness were achieved on the roads.
“We met with commercial bus drivers and agreed they pick and drop passengers only on the service lane.
“This is not just the standard practice but a safe thing to do to prevent loss of lives,” he said.
Okonkwo who was joined by Mr Umezinwa Chidi, the General Manager said that ‘NO PARKING TOW ZONE’ signs would be placed and enforced in the service lane in Onitsha area to stop private car users from parking on the service lane.
According to him, these private car owners park on both sides of the service lane, thus making it difficult for commercial drivers to access the service lane.
“We have designated car parks around onitsha, so private car owners should use them,” he said.
