Civil Society Demand Investigation Into Police Shooting Of Motorcyclist in Anambra
Anambra State Civil Society Network (ACSONET), a non governmental organisation, has condemned the killing of a commercial motorcyclist in Igbo- Ukwu, Aguata Local Government Area, Anambra State, by a Policeman, describing it as avoidable
The group said this in a statement signed its chairman Mr Chris Azor on Wednesday.
Azor said it was hit by shock and discomfiture that a law enforcement agent could shoot an unarmed citizen under the guise of enforcing the State government’s order banning commercial motorcycles from operating at certain hours of the night.
“From intelligence reports by our reliable sources, an argument ensued between some men of the Nigeria Police and the motorcyclist, resulting in the shooting to death of the latter.
“We are of the opinion that this condemnable action was avoidable and therefore absolutely unjustifiable,” it stated.
ASCONET called on those affected by the sad incident to be law abiding and calm while pursuing justice through lawful channels.
It commended the Anambra government for swiftly wading into the and assuring the peoole that those involved in the shooting would be prosecuted.
The group urged the Police Command in Anambra to make good its order to arrest, detain and prosecute the killer cop.
“We, as defenders of citizens’ rights are at alert and following up the process with a view to ensure that justice is served.
“We therefore, enjoin the citizens to remain calm and not to take laws into their hands.
“The reported incidents of arson and sundry violence are therefore, uncalled for, and should be discouraged in all ramifications, as our State and citizens are known for law and order, and resilience,” it said.
NewsMonitor reports that one person was killed during the protest against the killing on Wednesday and a total of police stations were burnt by the rampaging mob.
