Father, Two Sons Killed In Nnewi Construction Site Collapse

A man identified as Chizoba Aniefuna has lost his life in a storey building collapse at Egbu Umuenem, Otolo Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra.
The collapse of the building which was still under construction also claimed the lives of two sons of Aniefuna who was said to be the man handling the site.
One other person who escaped with injuries was rushed to nearby private hospital and was said to be responding to treatment.
Labourers at the site were the early rescuers at the site and the excavator deployed could not function due to breakdown.
Mr Victor Meju, Chairman Council For Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Anambra Chapter blamed the collapse on quackery.
Meju said foundation, poor concrete mixture, poor quality of materials, nonconformity to standard and non approval from relevant regulatory authorities led to the avoidable tragedy.
He said the site had been sealed off and that the owner of the building, Mr Chukwunafu Anamanjo will be invited for questioning to aid investigation.
Contributing, the Transition Committee Chairman of Nnewi North LGA, Engr. Obiora called on people to make use of certified engineers and other qualified personnel in the building sector at all times.
