Football Enthusiasts React To Plateau United FC’s Nkwobi, Ethanol Tweet
Some football fans, especially followers of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) have reacted with mixed feelings over a tweet on Plateau United FC page ahead of their game against Abia Warriors.
Plateau United FC would be playing home against Abia Warriors in the NPFL 2021/2022 Wk9 fixtures
The tweet which was on the club’s verified handle @plateau_united which likened Abia Warriors to Nkwobi, a local delicacy made with cow skin and ethanol a metaphor for alcoholic drink, ended with a threat of harm to the Plateau side if they don’t beat their visitors.
It said: “Dear @AbiaWarriors, I’m very sorry,
but you shall be devoured like hot
nkwobi by Plateau United.
“In fact, you will be washed down with two chilled bottles of ethanol”
The tweet continued “We will make sure that the nkwobi is laced
with miango pepper.
“Let our hands bend if we don’t bend you tomorrow”
Some fans dismissed it as a normal frenzy that follows the build up to a crucial game, others took exception that football was a friendly sport that doesn’t entertain such foul banter.
Tobechi tweeting @Country_boyo9 said “I hope you are aware this is a team page”
@hope_issaboy said “who dy(dey) handle this account?”
A WhatsApp user said “this is not the language of sportsmen.
Though a joke, it shouldn’t come from official handle of a professional club”.
Another said “foul language is not acceptable in football, it’s a cautionable offense”.
Also commenting, a WhatsApp user said “this is disappointing and a disgrace, the handler of this platform should be sacked Immediately,”
However, other fans have defended the tweet, saying it was just a flavour of humor.
