Football: Oyi Beat Dunukofia 1-0 In Brainbox Championship Opener In Anambra
The first Brainbox football championship kicked off on Saturday with a 1-0 win of Oyi Local Government Area football team over their Dunukofia LGA counterpart.
The competition was organised by Brainbox Foundation for National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) in the state.
A first half strike by Nnamdi John made the difference for the Oyi team which dominated play in the thrilling encounter.
Chikelue Iloenyosi, the Chairman of Anambra State Football Association who did the kick off said the competition was on of the responses to his call for private sector involvement in sports.
Iloenyosi commended the players for their adherence to the rules of the game while assuring that the FA would continue to provide administrative guidance for the growth of football.
He thanked the organisers, Brainbox Foundation for providing the platform for youths to engage constructively while calling on others to sponsor competition at the local government area or statewide levels as it be the opportunity somebody was waiting to come to limelight.
On his part, TonyCollins Nwabunwanne, Commissioner for Local Government and Town Union Matters said the competition would engender more friendly interaction among the youth and enhance peaceful coexistence at the grassroots.
Nwabunwanne said his ministry would support the competition by ensuring that NYCN chapters across the Local Government Areas participated.
Ifeanyichukwu Nwoye, General Manager of Brainbox Foundation said a total of 22 football teams were featuring in the championship and was open to players of all ages.
He said the first, second and third placed teams would go home with N3 million, N2 million and N1 million respectively while all other participating teams would get N200,000 at the end of the tournament.
