Hitchhike: NAU Cautions Staff Students Against Kidnappers, Thieves
Staff and students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka have been advised to be careful when soliciting or offering free ride to members of the public.
The Security of the institution issued the advisory in a Statement made available to newsmen in Awka on Thursday.
The Statement which was signed by Ken Chukwurah the Chief Safety Officer of NAU said intelligence gathered indicated that some unknown vehicle owners do enter the university and offer free ride to unsuspecting members of staff especially at closing hours.
He also said there had been reports where motorists who offer such free ride discover that their properties had been removed upon reaching home.
He warned motorists and pedestrians seeking free ride alike to be security conscious especially at this time of high insecurity, Kidnap and organ harvesting.
According to him, it has also been noticed too that some staff out of desperation to get free rides, position themselves at various strategic exit points, flagging down vehicles for lifts.
“This is worrisome in view of the precarious security situation in the state where
kidnapping, organ harvesting and other unwholesome activities take place.
“There have also been reports of staff who offer lifts to people from the university
only to discover on getting home that their laptops and other valuables have been
made away by the passengers.
“Let us be conscious and alert always, a stitch in time saves nine,” it said.
