ICAN Awka District Inaugurates Anayadufu as 10th District Chairman
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) on Saturday invested Dr Anthony Anyadufu as the 10th chairman of Awka District and Society of the body .
Anyadufu who succeeded Mr Francis Ezenwa was Inaugurated by Mallam Haruna Yahaya the national President General who was represented by Chibuzo Anyanechi a member of the council.
In his acceptance speech, the chairman promised to build on the foundation laid by his predecessors, prioritise welfare of members by making the district’s multipurpose cooperative functional and establish a Society For Women Accountants in Nigeria (SWAN)
Anyadufu said his team would promote the ICAN brand in Awka to make members of the profession more relevant and engage in capacity building for members through regular trainings and corporate collaboration.
“Our administration shall organise catch them young programmes, sponsor academic prizes for Best in Financial Accounting and partner the Anambra Internal Revenue Service in Tax Awareness campaigns in secondary school students”
He appreciated last Presidents in the district including Ezenwa his immediate predecessor for their contribution towards the growth of the body in Awka and urged their continued support.
In his Investiture Lecture, Prof. Olusegun Sogbesan called on accountants to uphold the tenets and principles of their profession in order to effectively carry out their mandate of resource management, allocation and utilisation of public funds.
Sogbesan who is the Director of Onitsha Business School said accountants were crucial in every society as they formulated and implemented fiscal policies as well as evaluate performance in private and public sectors
The Don who entitled his lecture as “Role of Accountants in Nation Building and Economic Development” said Nigeria was in economic challenges either because accountants were not doing their work or the people in authority were not listening to them.
According to him, it is not enough for Accountants to have the certification but they should complement it with the ethical principles of the profession.
“They must uphold ethical standards and transparency to ensure fiscal responsibility,” he said.
Some persons were bestowed varying awards at the occasion including Sogbesan, Ezenwa, Chief Ekene Enefe, Mrs Obianuju Okoli, and Mr Tim Okafor for their contributions to the accounting profession and Awka district and
society in particular.
