Mainpower Electricity Takes Over Electricity Distribution in Enugu State
The Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited (MED), a subsidiary of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) has been licensed to distribute electricity within Enugu State by the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC).
Mr Chijioke Okonkwo, Chairman/CEO of EERC presented the interim distribution license to MED in Enugu on Tuesday at the completion of the transition period for transfer of regulatory oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to EERC.
Okonkwo charged Mainpower to continue with the operations of electricity service delivery to the citizens of Enugu State and work with the Commission to ensure efficient, reliable, sustainable, and accountable service delivery in the long run.
Newsmonitor reports that the handover marks the end of EEDC operations in Enugu State for while NERC will no longer regulate electricity business within the state of Enugu.
Speaking at the event, Mr Kester Enwereonu, a member of the Board of Directors of Mainpower who received the license on behalf of the company said the successful transition was a new chapter which reflected the forward-thinking reforms in the power sector.
Enwereonu said that to accelerate transformation, MED would deploy re-engineered processes, cutting-edge technology, and smart tools designed to leapfrog past conventional barriers adding that technology was at the heart of the company’s strategy.
“Mainpower will be leveraging data-driven insights to enhance efficiency and improve service delivery and that will focus on building a future-ready distribution network.
“This network will be capable of delivering sustainable, reliable, and uninterrupted power to homes and businesses across the state.
“This is a bold step towards building a better future for Enugu State and with the regulatory oversight of the EERC, our commitment to operational excellence, and the support of our stakeholders.
“We are confident that Mainpower will achieve the tangible improvements that our customers deserve,” he said.
With the signing of the Electricity Act into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, States are now empowered to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity.
These states are expected to set up their own regulatory framework to regulate the electricity market in their states and issue operating licenses to potential investors.
Consequently, EEDC now oversees electricity distribution in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Imo States.
