NYG: Anambra Flops As Imo Dominate Southeast Zonal Eliminations
The poor performance of Anambra in sports continued at the Southeast zonal elimination held in Enugu between Aug. 17 and 18.
The Light of the Nation State failed to secure a slot in all the events they competed in at the event held for the five state Southeast states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo.
The zonal elimination was to produce Southeast representatives in team sports for the National Youth Games due to begin in Asaba, Delta State capital on Aug. 26.
Anambra presented seven team events including Football male, Cricket male, Basketball male, Volleyball male and female and Beach volleyball male and female but returned to Awka empty handed.
At the end of the Southeast Zonal elimination Anambra was missing in the final table of teams which qualified to represent the zone in Asaba.
On the contrary, Imo State topped the chart with 10 slots out of the available slots.
Teams Imo will feature are Abula male and female, Baseball male and female, Basketball, male, Cricket male, Handball female, Hockey female, Indoor Volleyball female, Rugby male.
Abia will present five teams including Beach Volleyball, male and female, Handball male, Hockey male and Rugby female while Enugu qualified in for events including Basketball female, Football male and female and Indoor Volleyball male.
Ebonyi will go to Asaba with a female cricket team, their only team that qualified from the zone.
Recall that Team Anambra finished the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta with two gold, six silver and 10 bronze worse than their performance in previous edition in Asaba where they won a total of 39 including six gold, nine silver and 24
bronze.
