NYSC Uniting Nigeria Through Cultural Interaction… Coordinator
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has been uniting the country through activities that encourage cultural interaction among youths.
Mrs Blessing Iruma, the Coordinator of NYSC said this during Cultural Carnival organised for 2022 Batch B, stream 1 corps members at permanent orientation camp, Mbaukwu/Umuawulu, Awka South LGA.
She said the carnival which entailed corps members grouped in 10 platoons learning, dramatising and competing with the major culture areas of the country was designed to help the corps members to know and respect their differences.
According to her, the cultural carnival is symbolic, unique and significant because, with it, the scheme tries to inculcate in the youth the rich and diverse cultural values in Nigeria, so that they can grow to honour, accept and promote them.
“We are a multiethnic and multicultural country, so, the NYSC designed its programme to create interaction among these values for better understanding and appreciation as a way of fostering national unity.
“It is built into our four cardinal programmes to recognise our cultural differences and similarities, it is to make corps members feel at home in Anambra by showcasing the culture of the people so that they won’t have problems adapting in the communities,” she said.
Iruma thanked the Anambra government who through the town union yourgs have set up an effective liaison between corps members and communities for easy blending adding Anambra remained a peaceful and accommodating place.
In his remark HRH, Igwe Joel Egwuonwu, the traditional ruler of Umuawulu, one of the host towns said politicians and parents should reach the youth to love themselves and eschew the hate and mutual distrust that is visible in their online activities.
Egwuonwu said culture was a crucial vehicle for national unity if well harnessed and thanked the NYSC for highlighting it in its activities.
The traditional ruler urged the government to create a prosperous economy that could take care of the teeming youths going into the labour market and reduce unemployment which was largely responsible for crime and social strife.
