Police, Arsonists In Gun Duel During Attack On Station In Anambra
Some arsonists who tried to launch an attack on the Police Divisional Headquarters, Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra on Friday Feb. 3 met stiff resistance from officers on duty.
The gunmen who had earlier attacked some personnel of the Anambra Vigilance Group, killing two in the process, on approaching the Station, started shooting randomly in an attempt to gain entrance into the facility.
DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra said the Police operatives engaged the armed men in a gun duel and repelled them due to the superior fire power.
“In a bid to flee the scene, the gunmen threw a petrol bomb into the station, which ignited the fire and affected the roof of an old building in the station.
“The fire service operatives responded swiftly and put off the fire,” he stated.
Ikenga said patrols had been intensified in the area and within the state.
Meanwhile, there was an attempted attack on the anti-cult office, Obosi in Idemili North LGA on Thursday.
The hoodlums were said to have arrived in three unmarked vehicles, a highlander, one Toyota Sienna and one Toyota Corolla.
Ikenga said the Police personnel stood firm, engaged the criminals and thwarted the heavily planned damage to the buildings in the formation.
According to him, during the gun duel one Police operative and a vigilante member were fatally hit by a bullet.
“The fire ignited by the patrol bomb they threw inside the police compound partially affected a few of the offices,” he stated.
