S’Falcon Stun Morocco In Dramatic Comeback To Win 10th WAFCON Title
The Super Falcons of Nigeria on Saturday defeated the Atlas Lionesses, the national football team of Morocco 3-2 to win the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) for the 10th time.
The Falcons who defeated Bayana of South Africa to book a place in the final started the game played at the Stade Olympique in Rabat on a lacklustre note by conceding two unreplied goals in the first half
Hosts Morocco opened the scoring in the 12th minute through the captain, Ghizlane Chebbak who found the net with a shot from outside the goal area while Sanaâ Mssoudy doubled the lead for Morocco’s in the 24th minute.
Nigeria against all odds staged a comeback in the second half via penalty, which Esther Okoronkwo’s penalty kick in the 71st minute.
Mercurial Okoronkwo also made a good assist which Folashade Ijamulusi, buried in the left bottom corner to draw level for Nigeria.
Okoronkwo, who was the Man of the match, again delivered a clever assist to Joe Echegini, who calmly slotted home in the 88th minute to seal the historic victory.
The victory marked the 10th time Nigeria ruled Africa in
women’s football.
