Six Die As People Returning From Burial Ram Into Truck In Awka
No fewer than six persons including two men and four women were killed in a road crash involving a truck and a bus at Nawfia axis, near Enugu-Agidi Junction, along the Awka–Onitsha expressway on the night.of Friday, Nov. 27.
Mrs Bridget Asekhauno, Anambra Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the crash and casualties to journalists in Awka.
She blamed the crash on reckless driving saying the vehicles involved were a yellow and black tipper, registration FGG21XV, and a red bus, registration XQ398AA.
“An eyewitness on the bus said it was travelling from Ebonyi to Onitsha after a Catholic Women Organisation burial.
“The bus driver attempted dangerous overtaking to make up for lost time, causing a head-on collision with the tipper,” Asekhauno said.
A total of 32 persons were involved, including nine men and 23 women.
Five women were injured while 21 other occupants escaped unharmed.
The victims were taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, where they were confirmed dead.
FRSC personnel moved in immediately and cleared the scene, and restored normal traffic flow.
Asekhauno described the accident as preventable, warning: “This tragic incident highlights the devastating consequences of reckless driving.”
She extended sympathies to victims’ families and called on motorists to obey traffic laws, avoid dangerous overtaking, and prioritise safety.
She said the FRSC was committed to enforcing traffic regulations, raising road safety awareness, and providing timely rescue services during emergencies.
