Six Teams Qualify For Finals Of Super8 Football Tournament In Anambra
Six clubs, two each from the three senatorial zones have qualified to the finals of maiden ‘My Anambra Football’ Super 8 Tournament in Anambra.
A total of 27 amateur football clubs participated in the play off stage of the competition which lasted between Feb.1 and Feb.3.
Oliver Ndigwe, a member of the Anambra State Football Association (AnSFA) and chairman of the Super 8 tournament said two teams that would join the six teams in the finals would be announced after match statistics had been compared to get the best losing sides.
He said the teams that had advanced to the next stage include GP World FA Nnewi, Smith City FC Awka, Pope JohnPaul FC of Okpuno, Golden Boys FC of Onitsha, Ifechikwu FC of Omor and Ranges FA of Achina.
Two teams qualified from each of the three senatorial districts of the state having emerged tops in their various groups.
The 3-day soccer fiesta held simultaneously in four venues including NEROS stadium Nanka, Chuba Ikpeazu Stadium Onitsha, Awka Stadium Awka and Anambra Polytechnic football field, Mgbakwu.
Ndigwe said the Super 8 was an indication that Anambra was full of talented football who had been looking for where to display their skills.
He said the quality of the competition was high and impressive inspire the challenge of poor playing arenas.
He said of all the venues used, only NEROS meet acceptable minimum for a competitive football and called on the state government to take drastic measure to address the problem of sports facility.
“It has been a great tournament, thanks to Aspire FC, the sponsors.
“We now have six teams out of the eight we are lookin for in ten finals property, the other two will be determined on best loser basis and they will be announced soon,” he said.
Rev. Fr. Obinna Dike Director of DOSAD FA had congratulated the teams for their cooperation in the competition while applauding officials for a good job.
“A word of praise too to the sponsor of the tournament, the FA, the referees, organising committee, the media, fans and well wishers,” Dike said.
