We cant supply free electricity to customers…EEDC
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) says it is not realistic to give free power supply to its customers as being canvassed by some people.
Mr Chukwuemeka Ezeh, Head of Corporate Communications, EEDC made the clarification in Awka on Thursday.
Emeka who led a team of EEDC management staff to delivered 60 cartons of Hand Sanitisers to Anambra government however said the company will provide regular power to isolation centres in the state.
He said EEDC does not own the electricity but was in business to buy and sell power as a business adding that somebody has to pay for there to be free supply.
According to him, EEDC is a business and cannot provide supply without the customers paying.
“If Federal government wanted them to give free electricity to Nigerians ,it should be willing to underwrite their cost as they only distribute what they received.
“EEDC will continue to provide electricity for our customers as much as we can within the limits of the supply they get from the generation companies.
“If it concluded as being proposed, we can push out electricity to customers but somebody has to pay , government can do that if it is convenient for them,“ he said.
Ezeh said EEDC was impressed with the efforts of Anambra government in combating the virus adding the electricity company would do all that was within its powers to complement their efforts.
“We have come to lend our support to Anambra government and also commend them for the support we have enjoyed from them as a business.
“We have expressed our company willingness to provide supply to those facilities that were set to manage the pandemic,” he said.
