Anambra FA board, council elections postponed indefinitely
The elections into Anambra State Football Association (AnSFA) board and Local Football Councils elections has been postponed indefinitely.
The 2020 ASFA elections were originally scheduled to hold on Monday July 27 and Tuesday July 28 respectively in Awka, the Anambra Capital.
Rev.Fr Obinna Dike, Chairman Media and Publicity subcommittee of the Electoral Committee said the postponement was a reaction to a letter from Anambra government which directed that the election be shelved as it violated the extant law on COVID-19 protocols.
This development increases the possibility of setting up of a caretaker committee because the four year tenure of the outgoing Ifeanyi Ubah led board which started on May 2, 2016 and extension of three months which started on April 28, would elapse on Tuesday.
Fr. Dike who disclosed this in a Statement issued on Sunday night said the elections would no longer hold as scheduled and that the committee would await further directives.
According to the statement, the Electoral Committee of the Anambra State Football Association received today, a letter from the Anambra State Government requesting the Committee to postpone the election into the state and local football boards.
“The Electoral Committee has forwarded the said letter to the Anambra State Football Association.
“In view of this development, the Electoral Committee wishes to inform the general public that the election earlier fixed for the 27th and 28th July 2020 will no longer hold as scheduled.
We regret any inconvenience this sudden postponement may caused to the candidates, delegates, observers, stakeholders and the general public,” it stated.
The Anambra government through the Commissioner for Information, C-Don Adinuba on Saturday July 25 issued a statement which directed that the election be cancelled.
It said the state law on Covid-19 which bans social gatherings including elections was still in force and directed the police to ensure that no individual or group gathered at the Bishop Obiefuna Retreat Centre venue of the election for the exercise.
