Anambra govt decry low teachers’ ICT compliance, holds E-conference
Prof. Kate Omenugha, Commissioner for Basic Education in Anambra says the government was upgrading the Information and Communication Technology rating among teachers in the state.
Omenugha said her ministry was organising an E-Conference for education stakeholders to sensitise them for post Covid-19 teaching and learning era.
Speaking on the conference, the Commissioner said the online meeting was the first in the series of activities geared towards preparing education stakeholders in the state for the New Normal in post COVID-19 education.
According to her, no fewer than 4,000 participants are expected at the conference which was theme ”Facing the New Normal: Post Covid-19 Education in Anambra state”
She regretted that most teachers in Anambra do not have internet enabled gadgets like computer, tablet or Android phones which was needed for ICT.
She said it was designed to equip students and teachers ahead of the schools resumption adding that the event was designed to stimulate innovative skills among teachers and boost education sector .
Omenugha said every teacher needs self development to move forward in the profession and ICT, saying that ICT is the only way to go for them to developed, especially at the post COVID-19 era.
“I understand that majority of the teachers in the state do not have android phone and lacking ICT knowledge, I wonder how they can effectively cope in the present education delivery.
“They do not have the android phone not because they don’t have the money to buy but because they do not see it as a priority.
“The conference would be used to create the consciousness and understanding among teachers as well as making them to appreciate the importance of android phone and ICT knowledge.
“Any teacher who is not ICT compliance today will not be able to fit into the present education,” she said .
On her part, Nweke said the conference would be streamed live on most social media including Facebook, Twitter, Zoom, YouTube among others, urging teachers, parents and students to hook up to the all important conference.
The ICT expert said it was time teachers started thinking globally and acting locally, noting that the government was being proactive by coming up with innovations to upgrade education system to ICT based.
Omenugha was joinedby Mrs Sally Mbanefo, Commissioner for Tertiary Education and Science Education.
