Anambra: IRCS Inaugurates Campaign Against Killings, Violence
The International Red Cross Society has inaugurated a campaign code named “Even Wars Have Limits” aimed at ending the cycle of insecurity and violence in Nigeria.
Prof. Peter Katchy, Chairman of Red Cross movement in Anambra disclosed this on Saturday at the celebration of 2021 World Red Cross Day in Awka.
The theme of 2021 World Red Cross Day celebration is; “Stop the War, Stop the Killing, Humanity is Unstoppable”.
Katchy said that the spate of insecurity and killing was no longer acceptable and that it demanded an active collaboration of Nigerians to put a stop to it.
He said that the daily tale of deaths in the country was fast diminishing the value of human life and leading to decimation of humanity adding that the number of internally displaced persons was increasing at an alarming rate.
The professor blamed the situation on stereotype, hatred, animosity, economic and political deprivation fueled by religion, ethnicity and ignorance.
“People are meeting their untimely and sudden deaths in unforeseen circumstances, the present security situation is a clear threat to national unity.
“Conflicts and violence are forcing millions to leave their homes and seek for safety elsewhere as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
“The most common causes of violence are hatred, jealousy, greed, selfishness rooted and fueled by ignorance.
“Prejudiced individuals tend to twist, distort, misinterpret or even ignore facts that conflict with their spellbound opinions,” he said.
He advocated for dialogue and negotiations as options that could lead to the end of the crisis and called on every warring group to drop their arms and explore dialogue.
“We are convinced that dialogue and equity are integral to achieving peace in this present time as development and peace are interdependent.
“Total conflict resolution contributes decisively to the dissipation and elimination of human needs and provides the foundation for lasting peace which reinforces viable sustainable development and liberates the resources needed for national development.”
