Anambra NMA Pays Medical Cost Of Personnel Injured During Rescue Operation Of Member
The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has commended the Commissioner and personnel of Police Command in Anambra for their gallantry in the rescue of its member, Dr Edwin Emegakor who was rescued on May 7.
The NMA which made the commendation after an Emergency General Meeting on Monday said it visited the personnel who sustained injuries during the rescue operation and undertook to pay their medical bills.
Emegakor, the Medical Director of Crown Hospital, Nkpor was abducted on May 7 and rescued on May 10.
The NMA is in a Communiqué which was signed by Dr Princeton Okam and Dr Ifeanyi Obiaeli condoles the Police Command, particularly Rapid Response/Anti-kidnapping Unit Awkuzu over the incident.
The body said Emegakor was kidnapped inside his hospital at Nkpor after attending to his patients in the evening of by unknown men in Military and Police uniforms
“Emegakor was rescued through the gallant efforts of Rapid Response/Anti-kidnap Squad Awkuzu unit some of whom sustained injuries during the fierce gun duel with the kidnappers.
“NMA Anambra leadership has visited the injured Police Officers at the hospital where they are receiving optimum care and opts to offset their medical treatment bills
“We appreciate the Police for rising up to the occasion and ensuring the safe release of the kidnapped colleague,” he said.
The NMA expressed concerns over what it considered ‘rising spate of insecurity’ in the State and suspended its planned industrial action slated to commence on May 11.
The association appreciated the Anambra government and called for strengthening of the security architecture in the State.
“We appreciate the Nigerian Police for their efforts in combating crime and ensuring safety of lives and properties even at huge cost.
“NMA Anambra State joins the call for the establishment of State Police and all necessary security measures that will ensure safety of lives and properties in the State,” it said.
