Association of professional bodies laud FG’s COVID-19 response

The Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN) has commended the Federal Government for its efforts at managing and containing the outbreak on Corona Virus Disease in the country.
The Anambra chapter of APBN which expressed concern over the rising number of confirmed cases said in a statement issued in Awka on Tuesday that COVID-19 threat in Nigeria was becoming worrisome.
The statement which was signed by Mr Joachim Ulasi chairman of the body and Mrs Jane Okafor its Public Relations Officer, APBN said urban populations were more at risk and deserved greater care.
The association said people in the cities should adhere strictly to the advice of distancing themselves physically from others and staying indoors to prevent easy spread of the virus.
“As the pandemic continues to spread, the APBN Anambra State Chapter is applauding the Federal and State Governments on the proactive measures taken so far for the protection of the life of the people against this deadly disease.
“The Association acknowledges and praises all those who are working tirelessly to contain the spread of Corona Virus in Nigeria, especially the government of Anambra State.
“However, APBN by this statement is reminding the public of the importance of the government’s effort in social distancing and hand washing as a key preventive measure against Covid-19.
“Urban populations are particularly at risk of viral respiratory infections due to population density and more frequent public gatherings in crowded spaces like markets, public transport or places of worship.
“The Association notes that in situations of this nature, apart from the urban population in general, the most vulnerable group to be hit hardest are the urban poor living in informal settlements and slums.
“These areas have high population density and lack basic amenities such as water and sanitation, therefore, these areas should be given adequate attention,” it stated.
APBN said the rural areas should not be neglected in the spread curtailing effort while calling for provision of test and support equipment for the more people across the strata of the society.
“Weadvocate that the rural areas which hold a considerable number of the country’s population should not be neglected in the various plans put in place to combat this pandemic.
“Government at all levels to provide timely support and services that will prevent the spread of Corona Virus in Nigeria.
There is no Corona virus vaccine yet and in rare cases, Covid-19 can lead to severe respiratory problems, kidney failure or death, obey the government order on social distancing,” it stated.
