Compelling Reasons APGA Should Seed Awka North Council Chairmanship Ticket To Ofemili Bloc
As the 2026 Anambra Local Government Council election gears up, it presents an opportunity for the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to tighten its grip on the state through promoting inclusiveness and giving the masses the best candidates.
The beauty of democracy is understanding the customary or peculiar administrative composition of a people and being able to let it shape their political lives without rancour.
This will not only guarantee political stability and even development but also further etch the values and principles of APGA in the heart of the people as an equitable, egalitarian and truly brothers’ keeper political party.
This is why Awka North Local Government Area, an agrarian people within the Awka Capital Territory should be of special interest to the leadership of APGA as the permutations continue on who should be and where the next Council Chairmanship slot should go to.
Firstly, Awka North is made of two political blocs, namely Enu-Ana comprising Achalla, Amanuke, Isuanocha, Mgbakwu and Urum and Ofemili made up of Amansea, Awba Ofemili, Ebenebe, Ugbene and Ugbenu.
It is noteworthy that since 2006 when APGA took over government in Anambra, only two council elections had been held and in both elections Enu-Ana zone was made to produce candidates for the party and they won their election with massive support from Ofemili bloc.
These were not accidents but as a result consensus reached by the people. For example, because in 2013, because Chief Dennis Ngene, an Ebenebe man from Ofemili was the last elected chairman, it was agreed that only Enu-Ana should produce candidate for APGA
The was what made aspirants from Ofemili including Deacon Felix Ekeh from Ugbenu, Chief Benjamin Ezenagu from Ebenebe, and Anthony Nchekwube from Amansea who has declared interest to shelve their ambitions to make way for Chief Cosmos Okonkwo from Isuanocha of Enu-Ana bloc to fly APGA ticket and eventually became Chairman of the council.
Also in 2024, the ticket of APGA went to ThankGod Anago from Mgbakwu of Enu-Ana who was subsequently elected Chairman of Awka North for two years even though it was not their turn.
The decision of the governor and the party to nominate all the Transition Committee Chairmen as candidates of APGA for the council election was the happenstance that secured the ticket and Chairmanship for Anago.
Apart from serving out their two years tenures, these two chairmen from Enu-Ana also enjoyed additional periods in of six months to 15 months as transition chairmen making the zone to have presided over the affairs of Awka North for approximately cumulative six years while Ofemili people are yet to have a bite.
It may interest us to know that under Gov. Chukwuma Soludo, Enu-Ana has solely occupied the Awka North Council Chairman seat, recall that Emmanuel Ucheze (Abiola Achalla) had been the transition committee chair for one year before Anago whose tenure would elapse in October stepped in.
There is therefore no gainsaying that the Ofemili bloc has demonstrated loyalty, good faith and sacrifice to both APGA and the internal agreement between them and Enu-Ana on the allocation of political offices available to them.
Also, there is an agreement of rotational one term for both Council Chairmanship and House of Assembly seats between them.
Currently, Ofemili is occupying the Awka North State Constituency seat while Enu-Ana is holding the position of Awka North Council Chairman and if the consensus is respected, Ofemili should go to the Council while Enu-Ana should go to the House of Assembly.
The task of respecting existing understanding between the two political blocs in Awka North becomes a lot easier because they are in the same political family of APGA which are both the ruling party in state and dominant in the area.
It is the onus of APGA under the national leadership of Soludo and national chairman of Mr Sly Ezeokenwa to ensure that peace, unity, equity and fairness is fostered among the good and loving people of Awka North by giving to Cesar what rightly belongs to him.
It is clear from the points above that rotation, equity, justice, fairness and positive reward principle favour Ofemili bloc for the Awka North Local Government Council Chairmanship ticket in the 2026 election.
It is also a call and moral responsibility for Enu-Ana to use this opportunity to show that they are true brothers and party people by living above selfishness, proclivity and greed as the Awk
a North Council election beckons.
