COOU Council Approves Dismissal Of Osegbue, Top VC Candidate, 4 Others
Prof. Chike Osegbue, top candidate for the Vice Chancellor position of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University has been dismissed by the University Council.
The University Council under Prof. Peter Onwualu, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, approved the sack of Osegbue and two others during its first meeting on Friday.
Recall that the Visitor to the institution, Gov. Chukwuma Soludo inaugurated the newly reconstituted governing Council on June 11.
Osegbue, a professor of Political Science is currently in court against the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kate Omenugha where he is challenging her appointment over him who finished first after the selection exercise.
Osegbue is praying the court to nullify the appointment of Omenugha on the grounds that her appointment did not meet criteria for appointment into the position as she only finished 5th at the end of the process.
Recall that the Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, the Pro Chancellor who supervised the VC recruitment exercise has earlier been sacked by the visitor.
The University Council said Osegbue was sacked because he abandoned his duties as a lecturer without any excuse or justification.
He had earlier been suspended for three which was extended for another three months in April before his dismissal.
Two other lecturers, Profs C. C. Nwabachili and Ifeoma Kakulu of the Faculty of Law, were also sacked for gross misconduct while Dr. I. H. Iheukwumere and Mr. Emeka Nwabunnia, of the Department of Microbiology, were dismissed for allegations of sexual harassment and intimidation.
The Council also approved the promotion of at least 13 Readers to full professorship.
Onwualu congratulated the new professors and urged justify their promotion.
