LP Chieftain Urges INEC Not To Abandon PVC Registration In Southeast
A Chieftain of the Labour Party in Anambra, Chief Okey Enekwe, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to suspend the ongoing voter registration in the Southeast region in the guise of insecurity.
Enekwe, a grassroots politician based in Anambra made the call while speaking with journalists in Awka on Friday.
He commended the electoral body for their efforts in the midst of pressure.
The businessman said the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) should not be suspended in any part of the region on the grounds of insecurity noting that the government had done well to ensure normalcy in the region.
He said the increase in the desire of Nigerians to participate in the electoral process should not be dampened but rather called for strengthened security around INEC facilities.
Enekwe said the so-called unknown gunmen were no more while Monday-sit at home as fast becoming a thing of the past.
According to him, my people go to work everyday and return home safely, Gov. Chuowuma Soludo has done so much to ensure that there is security and resident now sleep with their two eyes closed
“I am worried by the report that INEC wants to suspend the ongoing continuous voter registration exercise in the Southeast temporarily due to security reasons, there is no security challenge here, unless there is something we don’t know.
“That will be unfair and unfortunate , especially now that our people have taken it as a duty to register, obtain their permanent voter cards and vote in the election proper.
“There is no security in the Southeast to warrant such a decision, we live here, sleep here, wake here own and operate businesses all over Southeast states.
“So we are saying that INEC should go on with the registration here and try to move their services to communities,” he said.
Enekwe commended the people of Osun state for the peaceful poll saying the result was a true reflection of the decision of the people.
He attributed the outcome to the new electoral law which made for electronic transmission of results while commending President Muhammadu Buhari for allowing the amendments to sail through.
Enekwe said the poor performance of LP in the election would not affect their chances in the February 202 3presidential election provided the masses would be allowed to chose their leader.
“The Osun State governorship election was a good development. We are happy with the fact that Sen. Ademola Adeleke won the election for the PDP.
“It is correct to say that the Labour Party did not do well in Osun, we did not say we were going to win the election because all the preparations of the party for that election were concluded before Peter Obi joined the party about two months ago.
“We are satisfied with the outcome of the election, we are happy that the result reflected the choice of the people of Osun state and we believe that the same process will produce Peter Obi in 2023
