One Killed, Many Injured As Soludo Police Raid Onitsha Main Market
At least one person was shot dead when members of Operations Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) brigade otherwise known as Soludo Police raided the Emeka Offor Plaza axis of Onitsha Main Market on Tuesday.
The team had gone to the market for an undisclosed enforcement when the security personnel from Agunaechemba attached to them opened fire in the crowd, killing one woman and leaving several others severely wounded.
The situation led to breakdown of law and order as angry youths engaged in violent protest setting property on fire and interrupting commercial and social activities.
The Anambra government says normalcy had been restored and the erring officials handed over to the Police.
Dr Law Mefor,
Commissioner for Information, said the remains of the deceased identified as Miss Chinwe Igwe, had been deposited at the morgue for autopsy and preservation while the injured victims were receiving treatment.
Mefor said Gov. Chukwuma Soludo had directed the arrest and handover of the suspects to the Police for prosecution.
“We appreciate the swift intervention of the Police, who have restored calm and order to the area.
“An investigation into the incident has commenced, and the government will ensure that all necessary measures are taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future,” he said.
