Tiger 5-Aside Football Finalists in Awka
The Awka series of Tiger 5-Aside Football Championship ended on a high note at the New Berries Park Okpuno with Peace Warriors emerging champions.
Peace Warriors defeated their co-finalists, Peace Ambassadors with 3-1 on penalties in the game decided Saturday night amidst funfair and funfair
The N10 million street football in cage was sponsored by the Tiger Beer brand.
Peace Warriors went home with the ultimate prize of N5 million while Peace Ambassadors got N3 million for finishing second.
Sunday Sparks and Peace Dominion which lost out in their semi final encounters got N1 million each as consolation for making it to the last four in the championship which started with 16 teams.
Achonam Ifeatu, Captain of Peace Warriors commended Tiger Beer for providing the platform for street footballers saying they went into the competition three weeks ago with the hope they would win.
Achonam said Tiger had brought an innovation that gave hope to grassroots footballers who are not attached to any club.
“This is the type of opportunity underdog footballers are looking for, we need this type of event not just the money.
“Sports is a good way of keeping youths busy and keeping them away from crime and vices, so I hope we will get more of this.
“I thank Tiger for the mouthwatering prize and encourage youths to drink Tiger and drink it responsibly,” he said.
Ejiro Omonode of Masters Sports International, consultants to the event said it was a great end and worthy winners for the three weeks long football spectacle.
Omonode said Master Sports will continue to work with partners to take sports to the grassroots and hinterlands adding that the Tiger Beer 5-Aside Football series would move to Enugu and kick off will be three weeks time.
“I saw a number of talents and there was this particular young man of just over 18 who showed class. I must say that there are lots of positives from here.
“There is high possibility that one or two guys from here will move to a bigger platform.
“For us st Master Sports, we are into the business of sports, we will continue to generate content and add value to the s
ports ecosystem,” he said.
