Police Smash Five-Man Robbery Gang, Recover Car, Arms In Anambra
The Police Command in Anambra has intercepted a five man robbery gang in Anambra, killing two and recovering properties in the process.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Anambra who disclosed this in a Statement on Thursday said the incident happened at Enugwu Agidi Junction, Dunukofia Local Government Area of the State.
Ikenga said the operatives attached to Rapid Response Squad Awkuzu who acted on a tipoff laid ambush on the armed hoodlums suspected and engaged them in a gun duel.
He said upon sighting the operatives, the suspects engaged the personnel in a fierce gun battle that lasted for two hours resulting in fatal gunshot injuries that led to arrest of two while three escaped with varying degrees of injuries.
He said the Police recovered a black Toyota Highlander, one T.06 rifle, two pump-action guns, 24 rounds of T.06 ammunition, 15 live cartridges, assorted criminal charms and one cult red beret.
“While in deep agony, one of the armed suspects confessed the gang members as being part of those who launched an unsuccessful but repelled attack on the convoy of the former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige.
“They said they are the striking squad of Vikings confraternity on a mission to retaliate the death of one of their members by another rival cult group,” he said.
Ikenga described it as a major operational breakthrough in furtherance to the Command’s sustained efforts to rid Anambra of criminal elements and ensure the safety of lives and property.
He said the Commissioner Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc mnips PhD had charged the team to intensify efforts and ensure the arrest of other fleeing members of the gang particularly those who fled with gunshot injuries in the encounter.
He advised hospitals or related medical facilities to admit anyone with gunshot wounds or related injuries, but must endeavor to report such to the nearest Police Station immediately.
