RULAAC Condemns Extrajudicial Killing in Delta; Demands Speedy investigation, Justice
The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has condemned the extrajudicial killing of Mr Onyeka Emmanuel Ibeh (31) by a Police Inspector identified as Obi Ebri in Asaba, the Delta State capital town April 5, 2023.
Ebri who was attached to the Area Command shot and killed Ibeh inside his car with his pregnant wife watching around Ugbolu Area in Asaba during a stop and search operation along Ugbolu-Illah Road, Oshimili North LGA, Delta State.
The Civil Right group RULAAC in a Statement signed by Mr Okechukwu Nwanguma, its Executive Director called for prompt, impartial and effective investigation into the reckless shooting with a view to ensuring justice.
The organising expressed shock that after the events of #EndSARS in October 2020 and its aftermath, personnel of the Police Force could still engage in such reckless abuse of firearms.
“It is worrisome that officers still abuse their powers by killing fellow citizens extrajudicially for refusing to pay a bribe of N100 at a checkpoint.
“RULAAC commend the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Muhammed Ali, for his prompt action in ordering the detention and prosecution of the Police Inspector.
“We call in the CP to ensure a speedy and transparent disciplinary procedure that will lead to substantial justice,” he said.
Nwangwuma said the prompt investigation and reprimand of the culprit was necessary as it would create deterrence and to send a loud and clear message that impunity can no longer be tolerated by the NPF.
RULAAC conveyed its condolences to the family members of the victim.
