Ezeonwuka, Rojenny MD Tasks Administrators On Harnessing Nigeria’s Sporting Talents
Rommy Ezeonwuka, Managing Director of Rojenny Stadium and Games Village, Oba near Onitsha has said that the facility can help produce more world athletes if properly managed by sports administrators in the country.
Ezeonwuka said this while congratulating Tobi Amusan who won the 110 women hurdle title at the World Athletics Championships with a record time of 12.06s.
He said Nigeria was replete with Amusan in all sporting event but had not been able to identify, harness and project them.
He said the feat should serve as a wake up call to sports administrators from primary school to national level noting that Nigerian youths had the inherent abilities that could make them become useful in the field they found themselves in.
“Amusan has done well for herself, she has made Nigeria proud and we have many young athletes across the country that can do equally well but the problem is bad leadership that lacks vision.
“My stadium nurtured the 1993 Nigeria Eaglets of 1993 that won the world Cup and advanced into Atlanta 1996 Olympic world Cup.
“We also hosted the athletics event of the Nigeria Police Games in 2020. Rojenny is a platform to keep many youths off the streets, so government must find a way to keep the youths engaged through sports,” he said.
Ezeonwuka commended Amosun for her focus and consistency which took her to the top saying ‘she is proof that Nigerian youths aren’t lazy, they just do not have the opportunity and platform to showcase themselves’.
He said to regain the lost glory in Nigerian sports, managers of the sector should objectively promote excellence and eschew others considerations such as sectionalism, religion, ethnicity and nepotism.
