Azikiwe Varsity Students Attack Lecturer For Alleged Sexual Molestation, Mgt Launches Probe
The Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka has condemned the assault on a lecturer by student for allegedly attempting to take sexual advantage of a female student.
A video has gone viral showed some students physically assaulting a lecturer said to be of the Department of Chinese Studies, Faculty of Arts after an alleged failed attempt to sexually molest the female student.
The incident was said to have to have occured
on Aug. 15.
Mr Aloysius Emeka Attah, Director, Information and Public Relations of NAU described the incident as unfortunate and condemned the resort to violence, self-help.
Attah said the management under Prof. Stanley Anyaehie had zero-tolerance policy towards sexual misconduct, harassment and all forms of inappropriate behaviour.
He said the institution emphasised that allegations of misconduct must be handled through established institutional procedures and due process.
Attah said the matter was currently under review, with the appropriate administrative processes activated to ensure that justice is served fairly and objectively to all parties involved.
According to him, no individual or group is permitted to take the law into their own hands within the University environment.
“Given the seriousness of the matter, the University Management has directed that an immediate, comprehensive and impartial investigation be conducted to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.,” he said.
Attah said the University remained firmly committed to protecting the dignity, safety and wellbeing of its staff and students and would continue to take decisive action against any conduct that violate the principles.
