Oli, Anambra Reps. Candidate Offsets Bill Of Sickle Cell Child To Restore Hope
Chief Chukwudi Oli, candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for the Dunukofia, Njikoka and Anaocha (DNA) Federal Constituency has footed the medical bill of Master Sochima, a child living with sickle cell disorder.
Sochima(surname withheld) was treated at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku, Awka.
Oli’s intervention followed an appeal by Mrs Edwards Maduagwu, the Director of the Sickle Cell Orphanage and Underprivileged Home, Agulu, who reported that Sochima was battling with severe respiratory complications, persistent cough and breathing difficulties.
Maduagwu said in spite her repeated appeals for assistance, no respite had come the way of the ailing child.
Maduagwu said when she notified Oli about Sochima’s worsening condition, he did not waste time in stepping in to pay the child’s medical expenses to enable doctors continue the life-saving treatment.
According to her, Sochima urgently required oxygen and nebuliser support, respiratory medications, antibiotics, laboratory investigations and other critical medical care.
“He has become a father figure to them through his scholarship programme, paying their school fees and giving them hope for a brighter future despite their health challenges.
“Rather than making empty promises, he has consistently invested his personal resources to ensure that vulnerable children are not denied education because of poverty or illness.
“His latest intervention demonstrates that his commitment does not end with their education but extends to protecting their lives whenever medical emergencies arise,” she said.
Maduagwu commended the philanthropist for his kind intervention saying he had quietly carried the burden of caring for children living with sickle cell disorder in Anambra.
She said the Centre could no longer carry the enormous financial burden of caring for several vulnerable children, hence, she had to appeal to government institutions, individuals and previous donors for help.
“Oba Ezeafia’s timely intervention not only eased the financial burden but also restored hope to a family and caregivers who had refused to give up on the young boy,” she said.
Oba Ezeafia as he is fondly called, has continued to touch lives through educational sponsorships, healthcare support, youth empowerment and numerous interventions for the less privileged.
His philanthropy has consistently reflected his belief that leadership is best demonstrated through sacrifice, empathy and practical service to humanity, especially for those who have no one else to depend on.
Oba Ezeafia has continued to prove that the greatest legacy of leadership is the number of lives touched, restored and given renewed hope.
