Two Allegedly Die In Onitsha As CP Ama Intervenes,  Orders Full Scale Investigation 

 

There was confusion in Onitsha, the commercial capital of Anambra following the death of two persons on Wednesday.

 

One of the deceased died from gunshot injuries allegedly fired by a Police personnel and inability to get treatment on time.

 

The death triggered a protest that crippled commercial activities and movement in the area for hours which resulted in the death of another person.

 

An eyewitness simply identified as Godwin said the melee started when a cart pusher on his way to deliver goods was accosted by Police.

 

Godwin said when a search was conducted on him, a suspected incriminating item was found in him which made him take to his heels.

 

Godwin said a Police personnel fired a gunshot which left him with severe injuries.

 

“A wheelbarrow pusher was going to deliver goods and he was stopped by Police who searched his carton.

 

“They find a prohibited drugs and the man took off running, so, they shoot him at the leg.

 

“He was rushed to hospital but they refused to treat him and he bled to death.

 

“Thaf was when youths started protesting and caused commotion which led to death of  one other person,” he said 

 

Meanwhile, CP Nnanna-Oji Ama, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra has directed a thorough investigation into the crisis.

 

Ama, who swiftly waded into the confusion and addressed the crowd and also visited the wounded persons in the hospital.

Anambra blamed the incident on the victim’s attempt to resist arrest.

 

“The CP subsequently visited the victims at the hospital, where he assured them of the Command’s support and pledged to personally ensure that their medical expenses are covered.

 

“CP has also ordered a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly the events leading to the discharge of the firearm. 

 

“The investigation will establish the facts and ensure that appropriate action is taken based on its findings.

 

“CP appeals for calm and urges members of the public to remain peaceful and allow the investigation to run its course while reiterating the Command’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, respect for human life and the rule of law,” he said.
