Unizik Dept. of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry Hosts 2-Day Workshop
The Department of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has concluded a 2-day workshop on spectroscopy, metabolomics, and nanotechnology in drug discovery and delivery
The workshop which was themed “Spectroscopy, Metabolomics, and Nanotechnology in Drug Discovery and Delivery” held on May 28 and 29.
Local and international experts, researchers, faculty, and students took part in the workshop which provided a platform for enriching academic discourse.
Dr Blessing Umeokoli, Head of the Department, in her address, said the workshop was an venue for enhancing scientific knowledge, fostering international collaborations and equipping participants with advanced insights into drug research methodologies.
She commended the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Carol-Arinze Umeobi, for approving and supporting the workshop.
On his part, Prof. Sunday Nduka, Dean of the Faculty who represented the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, commended the Head of the Department and workshop facilitators.

Dr Armad Chakraborty and Prof. Kammat from the Department of Chemical Biology at IISAR Pune, India introduced metabolomics
This was followed by detailed discussions on spectroscopy led by Prof. John Igoli from VR Glasgow, UK, and Professor C.E. Umeyor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, who focused on excipient selection for nanoformulations.
A distinguished lecture was delivered by Prof. Vandana Patravale from the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, India who concentrated on nanotechnology-based delivery systems for natural products.
Professor F.B.C. Okoye from Nnamdi Azikiwe University addressed structure elucidation using spectroscopy within resource-limited settings.
Prof. Sebastien Poget from the College of Staten Island, New York, explored sodium channel gating-modifier toxins, while Dr Ali Yilmaz from the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, USA, presented innovative findings on metabolomics applications in natural product drug discovery.
The workshop concluded with a practical hands-on session centered on nanotechnology, followed by an engaging discussion on international perspectives in pharmaceutical research.
