NNL: Nnewi Utd Pip Go Round 1-0 On MD23
Nnewi Utd of Nnewi on Sunday beat visiting Go-Round FC by 1-0 on the matchday 23 of the Nigeria National League (NNL) B2 in the match decided at the Rojenny Stadium Oba, near Onitsha.
Rojenny is one of the best natural grass football pitches in the country.
The match was decided by the lone goal scored by Samson Oni from a spot kick following an unfriendly tackle on him just before the end of the first half.
The victory was the first by Anaedo Lions under their new coach, Benjamin Okaro.
Go Round FC fought hard to return parity but could not as the hosts’ goalkeeper Chisom Chiaha and good defense line thwarted all the threats.
Nnewi United now occupies the fifth on the table with six points behind the league leaders with just three matches left.
Reacting to the outcome of the game, Okaro of Nnewi United said it was not an easy win and a morale booster for his team.
According to him, it was a good but hard win. We thank God for the victory but I am not really satisfied because they could have done better.
“Without the penalty, maybe it could have been a draw but the penalty is part of the game because you have to initiate an attack to get a penalty,” he said.
On his part, Coach Ngozi Elechi of Go Round FC commended his boys for their performance but regretted that they could not convert their chances
Elechi said their next game against Cynosure FC was a must win and they were already preparing for it
“We have to win our home matches, since we have missed the promotion.
“My boys did well, just that they didn’t take their chances, we wasted up to three to four glaring chances, though we lost, I’m happy with my team’s performance,” he said.
